FIFA, the world’s governing body of soccer, fined Nigeria 150,000 Swiss Francs (about 154,128.75 USD) for the disorderly behavior of Super Eagles fans at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Match 29.
After a FIFA World Cup 2023 qualifier finished in a 1-1 draw, Nigerian fans invaded the field, causing a brawl that resulted in a stampede and numerous injuries.
The Black Stars’ performance was sufficient to eliminate Nigeria from the Qatar 2022 competition using the away goals rule.
FIFA expressed its displeasure in a letter from the Disciplinary Committee regarding the game’s inadequate planning and, more crucially, the lack of law and order and security at the location.
It further stated that there had been “violations of law and order in the stadium, invading stadiums and throwing objects” without according to the rules for current security.
Nigeria will play its subsequent home game without fans in addition to the 150,000 CHF fine.
