Police Corporal Okoi Liyomo of the Nigerian Police Force was fired after he was found in Cross River State beating a man with a cutlass.
The footage of the policeman beating a man with a cutlass’ flat side went viral on social media last week. The assault attracted the attention of the police, who swore to intervene.
After the video went viral on social media, Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), ordered Liyomo’s trial.
CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, the force’s public relations officer, revealed in a tweet on Friday that Liyomo met with the IGP in Abuja on Thursday and would face trial for the incident.
“PC Okoi Liyomo, the police officer shown in the viral video beating a man with a cutlass in Cross Rivers State, has been brought to the Force Headquarters Abuja,” the statement read.
We’ll give you a quick update. We continue to reaffirm our commitment to sanitizing the NPF, saying there will be no tolerance for foolishness and that we will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, unprofessionalism, corruption, harassment, or impoliteness.
According to information obtained from reporters Liyomo, who joined the force in 2019, will be charged after being fired.
His dismissal comes amidst public outcry, particularly from young people who have been complaining about police intimidation and extortion.
