Samsung Electronics said on Saturday it had suspended shipments to Russia due to a “geopolitical development” as major companies including Apple cut ties with Russia after invading Ukraine.

The South Korean tech giant is the world’s largest manufacturer of memory chips and a leading smartphone retailer in Russia.

Exports to Russia have been halted because of the recent geopolitical developments, according to Samsung Electronics.

The decision came at a time when Western governments, sports groups and large corporations have cut ties with Russia and imposed sanctions for attacks on its international neighbors.

According to Bloomberg News, Samsung controls more than 30% of the Russian smartphone market.
